In the news......
INFECTIOUS JOY!! Had to narrate an incident from yesterday with this young lad. I started teaching Levi Taylor last year at Glenfield College. However, 2021 was a mess with regards to lessons and Lockdowns. I was given to understand that Levi wasn't great at attendance and to just do what I could to help, when he attended. He only has a 15 minute lesson, due to limited time at school.
At the start he seemed fairly motivated, though NOT confident and very shy. He kept telling me that he wasn't good and he couldn't read etc etc...told him to not stress and just do his best. We made it through 2021, till the major Lockdown in August.
Something connected this year over the past 5 weeks, he is now preparing for NCEA LEVEL 1. He is only 16. I kept his focus on the music and told him to try and read as much and then feel the music. He has great feel. Yesterday, he did an amazing job and floored 3 pieces for his NCEA, well in advance of the exams. I was blown away and told him how amazing he was. I said with the performance he just did....he'd get an Excellence and not just an Achieved or Merit. Ecstatic and beaming he said " Thank you Sir, thank you, it's the 1st time anyone has said anything nice about me! I have been practicing!" He was overjoyed and it was infectious, I was so happy to see him...he jumped off the kit, squealed in delight...I wish I had a camera rolling...
These weren't kind words, I was being honest...and I hope that he will realise his potential, elevate his confidence and start to shine!
Onwards Levi...time to shine!

March 2022: Happy drummers are back!! I's been a month of full on lessons both at school and home. And "in person"...Yay!! Happy Drummers...these are only a few captured for the collage. There are many more...impossible to fit all the students on the Drumadiddle Rolls...
Most of them I haven't seen since August last year, including the little ones and teeny boppers who couldn't manage online lessons for various reasons. Happy smiles...revealed, as they took off their masks for the pictures, while some kept them hidden...but seeing them all again and their infectious smiles and enthusiasm, makes it all so worthwhile....
Happy Drum teacher too...badaboom...
Can't wait for the masks to be off PERMANENTLY....

NOV 2021: We have now done 7 weeks of online lessons in Term 3 and going into Week 4 of Term 4 still in Lockdown and still online! There are 50+ students online, as that's all that could be accommodated, due to time limitations of working from home. All 50+ have been awesome with their commitment and their weekly progress is amazing to see. Doing online lessons is NOT ideal but I believe this has given them new skills, essentially learning to manage on their own, self discipline and self motivation to keep lessons going. It's improved their reading skills, as well as time keeping - "staying in the pocket", as I cannot control this online.
A few have really stood out with their ability to push their boundaries over the past 10 weeks. They are literally learning 2-3 songs each week on their own and moving Grade levels simultaneously. Their reading skills are excellent, as well as their ability to execute the material. I had to give them a shout out! It is tremendous work. Very proud...
Jonah Chapman & Jessica Stefek (Orewa College), Alex Wang (Kingsway School), Daniel Mulcahy, Annabelle Gillmore & Oscar Williams (Murray's Bay Intermediate), Maisie Noble (Home school), Nathan Lee & Angel Jacobson (Takapuna Grammar) have been outstanding and almost all of them, also play in their school Rock, Jazz and Big bands!!

This term has been so disruptive with Auckland in LEVEL 4 Lockdown. From Week 4, lessons were hit badly and so had to go online. Not ideal...however so appreciative of these students and their parents for making the effort to keep the lessons going. Only 45% of the usual roster....but it was busy! Certainly more work with preparation on my part and getting lessons out to them in advance. The students also learnt to manage on their own, made notes and the progress has been amazing. READING made a big difference...hence their ability to cope. Kudos to this amazing bunch of online drum students!

AUG/SEP 2021: Once again this year has been disruptive with COVID 19 and Lockdowns...despite that, these 2 young lads decided to sit the TRINITY COLLEGE LONDON drum exams. One sat in July and the other in August. The results came in and as usual they were brilliant. Both DISTINCTIONS with a score of 91% each. How incredible is that...Nate Carroll at 13 did the GRADE 7 exam and Nathan Fry at 12 sat the GRADE 6. I am stoked and so should they be...a very proud moment indeed for Drumadiddle. Congratulations to you both! So well deserved!

MAY 2021: Last evening...had the last drum lesson with this amazingly talented girl. Now HEAD GIRL at Carmel College, she has responsibilities and a lot on her plate. So after getting to Grade 6, has decided she has to focus on school work till the end of the year...but will continue in the school jazz band and Concert band! Claims she's been learning drums for 5 years...gosh time flies! Ally Basa, you've been brilliant and a total pleasure to teach. Last year she took out the STUDENT of THE YEAR! And has been a Distinction student throughout! Glen Child, you've got to actually see her play - from Rock to Latin and all the tricky Grade 6 stuff...can we PLEASE get her on stage at school...just solo drums? Even if she says NO!! LOL!!
Congratulations Ally and wish you every success through your journey ahead...Musical or Academic! SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND!!

GIRL POWER on the drums…amazing! Never fails to impress me. This is a new student at Takapuna Grammar - Y12 student Angel Jacobson. She started drums with me this year but has a fair grounding from her previous teacher. Hadn’t done much song performance or chart reading and so we started on this 4 weeks ago, only to be hit by 2 Lockdowns, in the 4 weeks. At the last lockdown, a week ago…we went online, she played all the material I gave her at Grade 4 & 5 level, she worked it out on her own and executed it to the Tee!! I was totally blown away at her accuracy with all the material.
She is very shy and I spoke to the HOD about her and was informed she also plays guitar and has an amazing voice…writes her own music…now this I’ve got to see and hear!
Over the past 20+ years of teaching, only 30% of my students are girls and almost 80% have been outstanding…not saying the boys aren’t…. but overall, it’s only a small percentage!! It gets me every year…their focus, determination, hard work, amazing co ordination skills and musicality!! As such this post…I have to pay my respects to all the girls who’ve done drums over the years…and have stood out and continue to shine!!
Dani Howard, Vivian Chiu, MiRay Shirakami, Ayla Tse, Celine Russell, Dawn McGregor, Kristina Lim, Phoebe To, Arijana Lyng Olive, Prisca Lorenza, Waverley Taylor, Jessie Baker, Tash Easey, Carly Gill, Carla Tinsley, Sophie Doig, Chloe Tinsley, Gina Treleaven, Amanda Mujica, Adelle Santilan, Alice Lai, Ally Basa, Annabelle Gillmore, Angela Marshall, Ferne Skill, Hannah Bellett, Tamsin Dales, Tamsin McAsey, Isabella Wightman, Maddie Finch, Maya Erichsen, Olivia Geelen, Siobhan Fialho, Reegan von Benecke, Rin Shimizu, Ruth Lee, Sara Shen, Sindy Feng, Sophie Guptill, Skylla Steffensen, Victoria Amon…
POWER to you all…

JAN 2021: This young bunch made the extra effort all through 2020...it's about making the effort, practice and commitment to lessons as well as regular practice at home, where it's most needed! These youngsters did just that and stood out....had to showcase them! Congratulations...you made me proud!
_____________________________________________________________________________________________
JAN 2021: THE CARMEL COLLEGE Girls: Long overdue results from TRINITY COLLEGE, LONDON for exams done in 2020 from GRADE 1 to GRADE 6...but they've come through. One even bagged the STUDENT OF THE YEAR! Enjoy teaching these young lassies! They always put in 100% and are committed. Marks from 70-87%, with 3 DISTINCTIONS! Stoked! Thank you girls for making me proud! Congratulations to you all

NOV 2020: It's been the last few weeks of school and time to say farewell to a whole bunch of graduating students. They have all exceeded expectations and done me proud, despite this rather disrupted year due to COVID19, loss of lessons etc etc. They have ALL, received "Excellences" at their NCEA Levels 1-3 Music exams (Drums) and some have even done international Trinity College, London Drum Kit exams from Grades 5-8...with DISTINCTIONS! What a proud moment for Drumadiddle and for each of them too! I feel honoured and so proud of their achievements! BRAVO! I wish you every success, as you keep your musical journey alive and always there if you need my support!
_____________________________________________________________________________________________
SEPT 2020: I am in awe of these 2 youngsters. 13 yr old Nate Carroll (Glenfield Intermediate) and 15 yr old Alex Beattie (Long Bay College). The first 2 Drumadiddle students to sit the TRINITY GRADED Drum kit exams for 2020. I believe NZ is the only Country this year to hold Trinity College, London exams due to the Lockdowns the world over. These kids have had a tough year with disruptions to their lessons...with Lockdowns but kept up their hard work and persevered.
It paid!!! Today their results came in
Nate Carrol: GRADE 6 - DISTINCTION with 88%
Alex Beattie: GRADE 8 - DISTINCTION with 94%
The material they had to cover is super complex and I would struggle to play these pieces and would have to put as much practice over months, to execute...they just smashed it with their confidence and abilities!! At just 13 and 15 years of age...BRAVO!!!🤟👏👏👏 I am so very proud as I'm sure are their parents!

Jul 2020: I was requested by a drummer friend to tell my story for his website about Musicians from India. This was picked up by my old Music School - Musicians Institute in Hollywood and shared via Facebook...so thought I'd share this with you...in case you may want to have a read. This is only Part 1 - Mumbai. Two more segments to come - Hong Kong and New Zealand! Be warned there maybe some expletives in the videos...Here is the link:

JUL 2020: Yesterday was the last week of TERM 2. It's been a long TERM. All worth it...This is 14 year old Nathan Jin (Westlake Boys) and 15 year old Alex Beattie (Long Bay College) getting "EXCELLENCE" at their NCEA LEVEL 1 and LEVEL 2, respectively this week. These boys are outstanding...they didn't just play material for LEVELS 1 & 2 but did songs that are way above NCEA LEVEL 3...😄🤟👏👏👏. They are both sitting TRINITY College, London Grade 8 this year...what can I say...only HIGH EXPECTATIONS! Congratulations to you both...as always, have done Drumadiddle proud!

JUN 2020: Got a sideways compliment from the Orewa College music dept, thanks to these awesome students. They each performed for their NCEA LEVELS 1-3 Music performance (Drums).Angela Marshall, Reegan von Benecke, Josh Gibbins and Reid Simpson. The teachers who assessed them, bumped into me in the corridor and commented that all of them got "Excellence" for their performances. One stated that over the past 3 years of them teaching at Orewa College, they hadn't seen drummers do so well...😄I'll take that as a compliment. I've only been teaching there for 3 terms, so yes these kids did me proud in this short time span! Congratulations to you all!👏👏👏

JUN 2020: It's great to be back to normalcy after 8 weeks in Lockdown due to COVID 19. Back at school and already students have been involved in their NCEA Music exams. So proud of Ruth Lee (Rangitoto College - Level 2) who had her performance this week, achieving EXCELLENCE...brilliant! Hard work pays. She did a Grade 6 piece
_____________________________________________________________________________________________
FEB 2020: AS Term 1 gets underway, many of the Drumadiddle students have auditioned for school Rock & Jazz bands, orchestras and Concert Bands. It's heart warming when these youngsters come and inform me of their selection and how thrilled they are to be part of School Music projects. Have only shared pics of 4 budding new drummers, Anabelle Gillmore (MBIS), Jago Cleghorn (Campbell's Bay Primary), Jesse Jewel (Belmont Primary) and Oscar Williams (MBIS)....there are many more that have been selected and do Drumadiddle proud! Enjoy playing, performing and learn from the experience!

NOV 2019: Outstanding news from an outstanding student. 13 year old Nathan Jin (Westlake Boys) (he is ridiculously tall!!) informed me that he won the NZ AIMES award for the Arts (13 and under category) for 2019. We are so proud of his achievements! This is the 2nd Drumadiddle student in the past 3 years to reap this honour!! 2 years ago, it was Alex Beattie from Northcross Intermediate!!
Not only that, he has been recalled and invited once again to be drummer for the APO's Christmas Concert in Dec 2019 and at 13 has been selected to be the percussionist for the Westlake Boys and Girls schools, prestigious Symphony Orchestra. This is normally offered to senior students at the school! Go Nathan, your hard work and dedication is being rewarded! A proud moment indeed for you and for Drumadiddle! Thanks so much!
BTW: He is also being awarded for his skills at Basketball...so many talents!

OCT 2019: A little story of this young lassie, 16 year old Ruth Lee, from Rangitoto College. She moved here from Korea at the start of this year and lives down the road. She came over to request drum lessons and though she had some background with the instrument from Korea, wasn't very confident and her co ordination skills needed a boost! Very determined and focused, in just 3 terms she's made an amazing effort and now can read and play material at Trinity Grade 4 & 5. She only got a drum kit 3 months ago. Anyone from Rangitoto College Music dept...give this girl a chance...she has heaps of potential. She is shy and you can't get 2 words out of her...but she can PLAY!!

SEPT 19: I have had the pleasure to teach this young lad, Max Beullens from St. Kentigern school for about 2.5 years. He is a bright, enthusiastic boy with immense talent. He has a great ear for music and though he can read...he has a wonderful sense of feel for the music. Mum has shared pics of him performing with his pipe (bagpipes) band at school at a Musical evening. Last few months with lessons before he leaves school. Wish him much success in his musical journey!
______________________________________________________________________________________________
SEPT 19: This young lady, 10 year old, Sasha Gilberd took a little while to get her self confidence with performing. She is a very quiet, shy girl and so wonderful to see her share this picture. She performed at the Massey Leisure centre to 150 students and parents who do home education. And she did 4 songs...it's awesome to see her get out of her shell and perform...it takes a wee bit of courage. Well done Sasha!!

AUG 2019: 28 Drumadiddle Juniors aged 8-12 went in for the TRINITY COLLEGE, LONDON R n P Drum Kit examinations (INITIAL to GRADE 4) and came out with flying colours! 85% of them were attempting this for the first time and braved their fears, went into the exam studios, sat on a kit they have never played on before, in a strange environment and excelled! 8 students got DISTINCTIONS, 11 with HIGH MERITS, missing DISTINCTIONS by 2-3 marks, which was sad but still an awesome result. The rest got MERITS and 3 PASS results. A 100% PASS RATE!! CONGRATULATIONS to all of you...very proud moment for DRUMADIDDLE!
_____________________________________________________________________________________________
July 2019: These incredibly talented young lads aged between 10 - 11 years have outdone themselves with their skills and dexterity around the drum kit, playing material, well above students their age. They are all going to be sitting their Trinity Drum kit exams next month...time for them to SHINE and show what they are all about!! Little Maestros!!
Mikey Higgins, Nathan Fry, Nate Carroll and Elijah Harford Lewis

Over the years it's been quite incredible to see so many girls come in and play drums. What amazes me most is their commitment, focus and drive to strive towards excellence and this gets them to pick up quickly with co ordination skills, which takes boys a lot longer. These are some of the amazing young lassies aged 10-15 with Drumadiddle this year.

TERM 3: PIANO LESSONS for BEGINNERS: Over the past couple of years, siblings of drum students and parents kept requesting for classes for other instruments and so this term, Drumadiddle has expanded, just a little bit with PIANO lessons on one day of the week for school students aged 8 -18 years. This will be done under the tutelage of WINNIE HSU and wonderful pianist who I've had the privilege of working with on a number of Musical Theatre Productions around Auckland. She brings in all her skills and talent and is also very patient with young children. She will be an asset to Drumadiddle.

Nov 2018: Another proud moment for Drumadiddle student, 11 year old Nate Carroll, from Marlborough Primary. Over the year, this young lad has performed at a number of school music events as well as around the North Shore, picking up prizes and accolades along the way. Last week, Nate was selected to play on local TVNZ children's program, which was broadcast nationwide, quite an honour. Nate played to Fall Out Boy's track "Dance,Dance". And he NAILED IT!! One take, no edits...a LIVE performance. Here's the link, enjoy:

Oct 2018: Got this message this morning...13 year old Alex Beattie from Long Bay College...so proud of you Alex...from the time you were a 6 year old, you've strived towards excellence...
"I'm delighted to tell you that Alex won a Junior Excellence Award at the AIMES awards last night. As part of this he won a grant of $3000. On Saturday night, there is a big formal awards night for the senior AIMES award winners. Alex will be playing 'Caravan' with a 20 piece professional band. Thanks for all the work you do with him to help him with his drumming.
Warm regards,
Miranda Beattie"

SEPT 2018: What an amazing Term 3 its been, with some pretty outstanding results from so many young drummers who sat the TRINITY COLLEGE (LONDON) drum kit exams - INITIAL to GRADE 6 this term, as well as students who did their NCEA (Levels 1-3) Examinations and performances. 17 DISTINCTIONS out of 23 students at TRINITY and 4 our of 7 EXCELLENCES at the NCEA exams. I am so VERY proud of all the achievements not for the results but also for getting the courage to sit an exam. Its is stressful and puts you under pressure. Great stuff DRUMMERS!! Now to keep it up...you've set yourselves a High bar!! More details on the Examinations page. Here is a pic of the TRINITY COLLEGE HIGH ACHIEVERS!!
______________________________________________________________________________________________
JULY 2018: This young lad has done Drumadiddle proud. Nathan Jin (MBIS) is only 12 years old. He started drums just over a year and a half ago. He sat for his GRADE 4 Trinity Drum kit Music exam and got 94%...that's an amazingly high DISTINCTION. He got a DISTINCTION last year too at his GRADE 3 and in 2 months time is sitting for his GRADE 5. He will certainly do his best to excel. His dedication and hard work and heaps of practice makes all of this possible. What a proud moment for this young lad. On top of all this he also plays in the Concert Band, Jazz band and Rock Band at Murray's Bay Intermediate school (MBIS)

JUNE 2018: This past month have to make a mention of two amazing young girls who in just a year of lessons, starting from scratch, have moved at lightning speed with their hard work, dedication and practice to play and perform at a Grade 4 level. OUTSTANDING!! Rin Shimizu (Albany Sr High) was selected for drummer/percussionist in the school production of "Fiddler on the Roof" Quite a task/responsibility to undertake and Isabella Wightman (Takapuna Grammar) has been selected to play with a school band at the school Talent Quest. Stoked to be their mentor!! Well done girls...to more success!!

APRIL 2018: Zach Knill (13 years old) who's now moved from St Kentigern Boys School to the College, has continued to shine and get out into the real world and perform. On this term break the family went out to Rarotonga and Zach played a whole one hour set with the house band...pictured here! So very cool...thanks Dad Blair for the update!

DRUMADIDDLE OUTSTANDING STUDENT of the YEAR: NOV 2017: This year managed to put aside some funds to acknowledge some amazing students with a Trophy and had to do this retrospective from 2009. Drumadiddle started in 2005 but it took awhile to build up and develop students. So 2009 was the first in a long list of talented students. It was hard to pick just one in some years and there is talent abounding for the future...2018 will be very difficult to pick...but here goes...My Respects to each one of you...OUTSTANDING!! Some are missing, as they haven't made it across...but will add them in shortly.

SEPT 2017: This year 19 students (aged 7-18) sat for the TRINITY COLLEGE, LONDON drum kit exams in August. Some took on the highly challenging all rounded GRADED exams, while others chose the more Contemporary Rock n Pop syllabus. Super stoked with the 100% pass rate and 8 Distinctions (More details on the Examination page). Some of the students have only had a few months of lessons and are aged 7 upwards. Facing an International Level examination and scrutiny with examiners flown in from the UK, can certainly bring on the nerves and the pressure, so for these youngsters to knuckle down and face their fears...is an accomplishment in itself. Drumadiddle is so super PROUD of your achievements...take a bow boys n girls...truly deserved!!

SEPT 2017: Drumadiddle students join Mark and his band NASHA at the upcoming AUCKLAND COUNCIL DIWALI Celebrations at Aotea Square on 14 Oct 2017. It's a super opportunity for youngsters to join the band and get some on stage experience in front of large crowds. This time around, students participating are Isabella Wightman (Takapuna Grammar) playing some conga, bongo drums, ghungroos,
Rim Shimizu (Albany Senior High) playing shakers, cowbell and bodhran and Akshay Menon (Rangitoto College) playing Indian "Dhol" drums. Also Rapping with the band is student Anaru Broughton (Ex Hendrson High School)

JAN 2017: Earlier in December there was an advert looking for young drummers for a commercial, being made in NZ. 2 Drumadiddle students applied and despite the huge number of drummers from across NZ, both of them made it into the final round - Tash Easey & Carly Gill. I was so proud. GIRL POWER!!! Unfortunately only Carly made it through into the final selection and they both worked on their own to get into this final stage. Kudos to both of you. Congrats Carly, on making the FINAL selection and to your $2000 (reward).."take home pay" when this is done. That's a decent wage, aye?!!! Good on ya!

NOV 2016: Feeling the pride...was just informed that 14 year old Drumadiddle student, Kyle Francis (Albany Jr High) has been selected to audition in LA, California for the WCOPA 2017 (World Championships of Performing Arts). He had to perform last week (through his school) and I am as thrilled as you are Kyle, at being selected. It will be a super challenge at an international level, but it's more about performing and enjoying what you do rather than stressing about winning an international competition. Wish you well and enjoy the experience!! You have all our support!! Rock on!! Pic: Courtesy Vishwa Balasubramanian (Clixtures)

NOV 2016: So stoked...this is 11 year old Asha Gin (St. Kentigern Girls School) and one of my new students this year. She had an audition last week for the APO (Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra) Children's Xmas Concert to be held in a couple of weeks, under Eric Renner. She was presented with fairly challenging 2 pieces (Snare drum) to perform and with some help, she pushed her limits and worked at the 2 pieces....she was selected to be "The Little Drummer Girl"....received this news today...so happy for her...CONGRATS and look forward to working on the Concert material....this is my 2nd student to be selected, the last was Filip Kus a few years ago...quite an honour!! NOV 2016: Drumadiddle students perform with Mark's INDO KIWI Band - NASHA for the Finale of the Orewa Summer Surf Concert (26 Nov) as well as the Auckland Santa Parade (27 Nov) on Queen Street. This is the MAIN Santa Xmas event held by the city and the first time in their 80 year history to feature a LIVE band on a float at the parade. What a thrill and it will be so much fun. Students participating are Carla Tinsley (Long Bay College) Natasha Easey (ex Rangitoto College), Gabrielle Mackisack (Carmel College), Sophie Doig (Takapuna Grammar), Chloe Tinsley (Rangitoto College) and Akshay Menon on Dhol (Indian drums) (Rangitoto College). The DRUMADIDDLE student concert (15/16 Oct 2016) is 2 days away and this week was quite exciting for the students, all preparing and playing with foldback monitors and headphones...they really enjoyed the professional experience...and they are looking forward to more excitement over the weekend. Being a NON profit Drumadiddle family affair, if any surplus materialises, we plan to donate this to ex Drumadiddle student Tash Easey, who is keen to raise funds for mental illness through her FB page EMPATH FINDER on behalf of LIVE MORE AWESOME....this is Mental Health awareness week in NZ...so it's wonderful to offer some support...

SEPT 2016: Carly Gill (Westlake Girls High School) has been a student with Drumadiddle for just 4 years. She started at zero and today, I have to say is a 'hero' and has certainly impressed and made her mark!! She got a 94% score in her TRINITY College, London Grade 6 exam and that's NOT an easy feat...playing on a kit that is unfamiliar and with only a couple of minutes to get familiar with the environment of the exam studio room...what a way to SHINE!! She has put in an immense effort, is highly self motivated and that is what brings in results. Congratulations...I am so very proud, as you should be too...now awaiting your NCEA Level 3 results...

01 September 2016: An AMAZING and MIND Blowing Concert/Clinic by two of the finest drummers on the planet brought down to NZ to mesmerise and WOW...and they did!!!! Last evening 35 DRUMADIDDLE students (aged 7-18) and parents attended this Clinic and were enthralled and entertained by Dave Elitch and Chris Coleman's drumming and the latter's amazing sense of humour. At least 7 students went home with sticks and other merchandise and pictures with these LEGENDS and we even got an autographed poster and some drumheads. Thanks RockShop...for bringing these guys down to NZ and giving us the opportunity to witness musicianship of this calibre, up close and personal....you are LEGENDS too...
Only a few students managed to hang on till the end...being a school day...this went on for almost 3.5 hours

JUNE 2016: I was lucky enough to get to Belmont Primary school yesterday as my youngest student, 7 year old, Nathan Fry was performing in front of the whole school at morning assembly. His Debut performance!! He decided to play a song, he'd worked out himself, One Direction's " Steal my Girl". He's sure to steal ALL the girls....and their hearts too...A very Proud Moment for his parents and I felt ever so proud too...his confidence and the ability to mesmerise the audience and their participation for almost the entire song...was stunning to see. Kudos Nathan...looking forward to the next one... attached are a couple of video clips...at this performance and one at his lesson.

MAY 2016: So proud of these youngsters...Tash Easey and Jayan Bhikha on their graduation with their Music Degrees. Both students came to me at quite a young age wanting to learn drums, purely for the love of the instrument. In their senior years at Rangitoto College, they took on a more serious approach and sat their NCEA level 1-3 exams as well as Trinity College, London exams and excelled in both. I was stoked that they also wished to pursue a career in music and came out of UNI shining....I wish you both amazing careers in the industry and am exceedingly proud of all your achievements over the years...and there have been many!!

April 2016: Term 1 comes to an end and these very talented 13-14 year olds (Year 9 students) from Henderson High School have certainly made an impression. They started as beginners in Feb and in an amazing short time of 7 weeks or so, got down basic rhythm patterns under their belts and have moved onto Grade 1 song charts. This despite the 30 minute lesson shared by the 3 of them. 10 minutes each. I recognised their talents and their focus and so grouped them together (being the nature of lessons at school). Well done and kudos to you all!!

April 2016: This young lassie, Alice Lai (Carmel College) an international student from a small town in China, decided to do drums a few weeks ago, with the single minded intention to learn Bruno Mars's "Uptown Funk". With a short 10 minute window as part of a group lesson, she realised this wouldn't get her to where she wanted to be and so requested a private half hour lesson. In the last 3 weeks she has gone from playing simple patterns to Grade 1 level drum charts. Stunning for the short time span. She is extremely focused, driven, self motivated and hard working. I can't wait for her to play her dream song and I'm sure this will happen in weeks, rather than months...
Moving from China, 2 years ago, she has worked at her English language skills too and with her determination, she is sure to make a success in any endeavour she undertakes! Great stuff Alice!!

Carla Tinsley (17 years), Long Bay College has been a Drumadiddle student for the past 3.5 years. Shy and introverted, she is now gaining the much needed confidence to go out and play and it's certainly impressive to see her put a band together with her mates Lucy and Jess. The band is called SLUMBUG. They are an alternative Rock band doing original music as well as covers. They have been in the Auckland circuit over the past year, playing almost weekly at various pubs and venues and even participating at a Music Festival in Tauranga. They now plan to also work with another Drumadiddle student, Anaru Broughton, a Rapper from the West, incorporating his style into their music. Can't wait to hear your collaboration and wish you both all the very best!! Good on ya...

Feb 19, 2016: Carly Gill (Westlake Girls High School) (17 years old)..this young lady started drums with me 4 years ago, knowing very little!! Now in her FINAL year at school she has decided to take up MUSIC as a subject in her FINAL year of NCEA. She is so focused, determined and hard working that a week ago, I was offered a job to teach at the MUSIC EDUCATION CENTRE on the Shore, which I had to turn down, due to lack of time. I however recommended Carly...she got the job and has already started teaching. This is what it's all about!! FANTASTIC!! She plays in her own band, self titled "Carolina", writing original music, she can transcribe and read material up to Grade 7 without my help and possibly more....(I'm not too sure...ha ha ha), learns bass guitar (With Maestro Dean Rodrigues) and plans to do Composition and Arranging after Graduation...with talent abounding....I feel truly blessed to be her mentor!! Go Carly....be the amazing musician you are and strive to be!!

05 Feb 2016: SUPER news!! Another success story!! Ex Student Dani Howard lives her dream. So proud to have been one of her mentors in her early years 1998-2005 from age 5. Yesterday her composition " Velvet Spires" for large Orchestra and Percussion was premiered and performed by the Royal College of Music (RCM) Philharmonic in the UK. Her passion, dedication, focus and hard work, besides the abundance of talent allows her to shine. At age 5 thanks to mumBelinda Howard's insistence, I started teaching her and was blown away by her talent, with continuous nurturing from amazing school music mentors,Jacqueline Gourlay Grant, Gethyn Clothier and Debra Jones...saw her through to RCM in 2012...brilliant Dani...so proud of you! Well done!! Hope to see and hear the piece one day!! We even had a jam in a pub in 2013 in HK...

Bass Lessons commence in Term 2 with ex Drumadiddle student Dean conducting the same for interested students. Carly Gill pictured here, has decided to do alternate lessons with drums one week and bass the next, thereby extending her musical skills to both rhythmic and melodic ideas! Dean has completed his Bachelor of Music Degree from Massey University 2 years ago and is accomplished both on drums and bass and plays with a number of bands across Auckland.

An outstanding bunch of students aged from 9 - 17 years of age, Alex Beattie, Ethan Archer, Filip Kus & Matthew Peacock. In Nov 2014, they sat for their Trinity College, London Graded drum kit exams and despite this falling in the midst of school end of year exams...they took this in their stride and came up trumps....all of them securing DISTINCTION Certificates...took almost 6 months for the Certs to arrive....so proud of your achievements, boys!!

This young lassie started drums with Drumadiddle back in Year 9, at Henderson High School till Year 12. Multi Talented, she quit drums to continue her other passion, Curling and was selected for the NZ Junior Team. Her parents being in the Senior Team. She shone in the sport and travelled overseas, Japan, China, Europe for tournaments bringing in numerous accolades and medals. Also, took on full time work with Spark and still continues her Sales job. She stayed in contact and 3 years later made a surprise visit to see Mark and gave the drums a whirl. A bit rusty after a 3 year hiatus, she's decided to get back to it. from April 2015..even just for FUN, as she enjoys playing the instrument!! Welcome back Waverley Anne Taylor....

APRIL 2015 : DRUMADIDDLE hosts students and parents to watch WHIPLASH, the story of a budding young drummer and his over aggressive Jazz Band mentor! This was an Oscar winning performance from J K Simmons. Being an R 13 film, viewership was restricted to older students...but a couple young'uns did sneak in, but got their parents permission. A great time was had by all...lots of sugar treats and snacks were shared...students, parents, ex-students and even grandparents

MARCH 2015: How proud can we be at DRUMADIDDLE, when a student claims they are now OBSESSED with transcribing their own drum parts.....Carly Gill (Westlake Girls) was requested to try her hand at transcribing. She has been learning drums for just over 2 years. Not only did she transcribe a song, but in her enthusiasm did 3 songs in one week and they were all pretty difficult and she played them too. That was stunning..minor corrections to the song structure but her rhythm notation was flawless. Two younger boys, David Moore and Grierson Fox (Westlake Boys) also put their minds to work and have also transcribed a song each. Just goes to show their confidence levels. Well done!!

Filip Kus is drummer for Rosmini College Jr Concert Band and Jazz band, while Christian Valdez has secured the drum throne at the Senior Concert Band and Jazz band. More students will probably get drum positions over the coming weeks, look forward to more positive news! Congratulations all...Great stuff!!!

DRUMADIDDLE's first 3 "TRANSCRIBERS". Term 1 (FEB 2015) has just started a couple of weeks ago and it was quite amazing to see these young lads make an effort to transcribe their first songs. Kyle Francis (Albany Jr High), Adam Freeman (Westlake Boys) and Christian Valdez (Rosmini College) chose easy enough contemporary Pop songs and sat down, had a listen and wrote out their drum parts with almost 90% accuracy. All three of them (aged between 13-15 years) have been learning drums for around 4 years now and are quite comfortable reading charts, so it was only a matter of time for them to gain confidence and realise they could also "WRITE" out their own drum scores.....Congratulations Boys!! Hopefully we will get more song material written out this year.

Dec 2013 & Jan 2014, Mark spent a couple of weeks in Hong Kong and managed to meet up with some of his past students. They all took some time off from their hectic schedules to see Mark, chat about school days, their future plans, about life in general and shared stories....and even managed a short acoustic jam with Dani at a pub. Most of these young adults were aged between 12-14 years when Mark left HK....but they've stayed in touch over the past 8 years....even though they are scattered across the globe and happened to be in HK at this time

It is a sight reading gig and requires a lot of confidence and she aced it...holding a full 10 piece orchestra together....AWESOME!!
She has now proven, beyond a doubt, she is ready for the professional world of Music...and given me early retirement....

10 SEPTEMBER, 2013. Angelo Terry, a student of mine at Henderson High School is crazy about drums and started taking brief (10 minute) lessons with me at school in 2010. The first year he could barely grasp rhythm patterns and took almost the entire year to get his basic coordination and to learn 3 patterns...however, he persisted and with sheer determination learnt a few songs. 4 years later he has at least 10 songs that he can play (Mostly GREEN DAY, his favorite band)...this is a clip of him, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoUCA8eF4W0&feature=youtu.be I am in awe of his achievements...he worked out these songs on his own...NO HELP from me. It goes to show...with patience, determination, you can achieve anything....I am so proud of you Angelo and I am sure wonderful things will come your way...a small compliment from his MUM...
" Dear Mark, Thank you so much for giving Angelo the opportunity to play at the assembly today. It meant a lot to me, his family, to his friends, his class and of course to Angelo, himself. Without your encouragement and teaching he would never have reached that standard of playing. I would have liked the headmaster to have mentioned that at the assembly. Angelo is so happy and positive tonight . It really has thrilled him. Thanks once again. Margot Trochhi"
If anyone has any connections to get Angelo noticed on TV...I am confident he will amaze the NZ public and inspire anyone with handicaps...do get in touch!! I hope to get a better recording of some of his stuff soon...he finishes school in a few months!!

My first student in Auckland, DEAN RODRIGUES, (my nephew) started the drums while in Year 9 at Rosmini College and within the year astounded me with his abilities and the gift of musicianship...guess it's in the genes!!!LOL!!! His talents were also recognized by the HOD (Music) and Dean was soon immersed as drummer for almost all Rosmini College Music productions. By the time Dean got to his final year at school, he had decided to follow in his mentor's footsteps and further his musical dreams and aspirations enrolling at Massey University Jazz Degree Program. In June 2013, Dean did his 3rd year Musical Recital along with fellow students and the faculty. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9m2vNeyTnBw&feature=youtu.be

This is Angelo Terry from Henderson High School. This young lad has been with me for the past 4 years and is a student with special needs. The co-ordination skills required to learn drum kit is not easy and I took Angelo on with some hesitation. He has amazed me with his perseverance and commitment to learning and is certainly passionate about the instrument. Despite the odds, Angelo has built up quite a repertoire of songs, mostly GREEN DAY, (his favourite band), COLDPLAY and an assortment of other tunes. He still cannot read, but has an amazing ear and over the last year or so has been able to listen to songs off his Ipod and play them without my help!!
Angelo has done me proud and is a shining example of what you can achieve with dedication, practice, passion and respect for the talent you've been blessed with!!
He blew away the audience both at the 2010 & 2011 Drumadiddle Concerts and is anxiously awaiting the next one!!

Some of my very first students (when I migrated to Auckland in 2005) are graduating from school this year and moving on with their lives at University or at their new work places and I have mixed emotions seeing them move on!! Like an old dad, I am sad to see them go but honored that I have made an influence in their lives. 2 students have decided to follow their mentor and make music their careers and have taken this on at University. Natasha Easey and Jayan Bhikha I wish you every success in your future endeavors and I am always available to you if you need any advice or support. I have 3 more wonderful students who finish/finished this year – Waverley Taylor, Ben Bristow and Jessie Baker and once again, I wish you a bright future in whatever you decide to do and you know where to find me…if ever my help is needed!

I must mention one very outstanding young lady, Michelle Watson (graduating from Uni this year) who took on drum lessons for a period of 4 months and rocketed from Zero to Grade 2 in that amazingly short time frame. She moves on as well to take up work at Disney World in the U.S and I hope that she will continue to develop and hone her drum skills in her spare time.

High spirited and fun loving student WAVERLEY TAYLOR from HHS and colleague JESSIE BAKER, enjoyed doing the drum duo combo and made quite an impact both at school and at the 2011 DRUMADIDDLE Concert with the power of two drummers on stage and the beauty of synchronisation...she enticed fellow school mates to follow suit...Thomas Spiers, Lily Fityus and Angelo Terry, causing quite a din and a stir...to rouse the entire Music Dept. Mark took Waverley down to Lake Taupo with his family to see the DOOBIE BROTHERS, who also do the double drummer setup....in Jan 2012.

In 2011, Tash (Natasha Easey) lost her locks to raise money for a "good cause" (Cancer awareness), Mark followed suit...but lost it for "good" and without too much effort or fuss!!
